Abstract :
This paper aims to investigate the negative impact of poverty in Charles Dickens novels. It states that English language learners in schools and universities in Sudan and readers of English literature are not aware of English culture and literature, written by Charles Dickens. Therefore, it sheds light on one of the important cultural themes (poverty). It attempts to provide visions, insights and concepts to help; learners, teachers, to know more about English culture and to put much stress on the styles and themes of Oliver Twist. It is also hoped to be of great value to those who are interested in English literature specially Charles Dickens writings. The subjects of this study are EFL learners in the Faculty of Education, Open University of Sudan. It stresses on presenting the themes of poverty of Charles Dickens novel. It adopts the analytical method through critical analysis. "Oliver Twist" will be analyzed in terms of the theme and the style to reflect how Charles Dickens portrays the British Culture. In the light of findings and conclusions of the study, following recommendations were made: Literature of dickens should be from essentials at English teaching and learning. Teachers should be highly trained in the field of literature so as to reflect the English cultures adequately. Students should be exposed for more literary texts. Teachers should be aware of students interest when choosing literature syllabus. Highly qualified teachers in public sector universities of Sudan are appointed.
