Abstract :
Introduction: Self-medication is the act of administering medications on your own, without medical guidance, this practice can delay a diagnosis such as hiding a more serious disease. The drug advertisements forget the specific considerations of adverse and toxic actions, presenting only the beneficial part of the drugs action. General objective: To assess the influence of drug advertising on self-medication, to verify the main risks and causes, in addition to highlighting the role of the pharmacist in guiding and raising patient awareness in the practice of self-medication. This professional has to be skilled in the face of advances in the field of medicines, always seeking knowledge, updating himself to give good guidance on this topic. Methodology:This is a narrative bibliographic review research in order to demonstrate the factors influencing advertising of medicines, and the role of the pharmaceutical professional in guiding responsible self-medication, analyzing retrospectively and qualitatively, the articles available in the electronic databases SCIELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online), Revista Científica, Google Acadêmicos, BVS (Virtual Library in Between 2008 and 2020. Results and discussion: The main reasons why selfmedication is becoming more and more frequent, and its irrational use can be harmful to health, as it is not correct to self-medicate , but look for professionals who understand the subject, such as doctors, pharmacists, dentists and others , thus avoiding serious and irreversible health risks. Conclusion / Final Considerations: It was observed that selfmedication without the guidance of a qualified professional can cause several problems related to the patients health such as intoxication, drug interaction, dependence or even mask a serious pathology.
