Abstract :
Introduction: Obesity is a global problem that affects about 3 billion people, being considered a chronic disease that can cause or stimulate the development of other types of diseases. Weight loss has become the main focus of many campaigns in the media, as much as in society, due to this, the market for appetite-suppressing drugs has been growing due to the constant search for people for quick weight loss. Objective: Conduct a bibliographic review about the main drugs used in the weight loss process and the necessary care for patients with chronic non-communicable diseases. Method: This was a systematic bibliographic review based on the scientific search platforms Scielo (Scientific Electronic Library Online) and Lilacs (Virtual Health Library), for searching articles indexed in national journals from 2010 to 2020, as well as dissertations Masters and Doctoral theses. The keywords formed from the Decs platform (Health Sciences Descriptors) were: Weight loss, Medicines, Phytotherapics, Treatment, Adverse effect, Medicines, Phytotherapics, Treatment, Adverse effect. Results: Both herbal medicines and industrialized drugs have a significant effect on weight loss therapy. However, it is necessary to use them properly and rationally, taking into account the possible side effects and toxic levels that may arise during the treatment. For this reason, the pharmaceutical professional plays a fundamental role in monitoring and controlling the dispensing of these drugs. Conclusion: The most commercialized herbal medicines and most prescribed by doctors as the first choice for treating obesity are Camellia Sinensis (green tea), Garcinia Cambogia, Caralluma, and Cavalinha. Among the industrialized drugs used for this purpose, sibutramine and Orlistat stand out, the only ones authorized for commercialization by ANVISA.
