Abstract :
There is a record of the use of guinea pigs since antiquity, with the aim of studying reactions caused by different substances in a living organism. Through the field of innovation of science, today we have alternative means that replace the use of these guinea pigs. This substitution is being made gradually and it is always necessary to validate the tests performed, so that in the future the guinea pigs are no longer used in these studies. This article is an integrative literature review, which aims to discuss methods that are an alternative to the use of guinea pigs in toxicological experiments and to evaluate their advantages and disadvantages. The methodology used was to perform a database search for scientific articles published in indexed journals, selected through database searches: Scientific Eletronic Library Online (SciELO), PubMed and ScienceDirect. 394 scientific articles were found and based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, only 06 were used for this study. Through the evaluated works, we concluded that the alternative methods that substitute the use of guinea pigs, have several advantages in their handling. However, these methods cannot replace all the tests, and the use of animals is still necessary.
