Abstract :
Inflammatory bowel diseases affect the gastrointestinal tract, compromising intestinal integrity. Functional foods, of which probiotics stand out, offer advantages in the prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal problems. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify the main benefits of natural probiotics with possible application in the alternative treatment of diseases that affect the gastrointestinal system, through a literature review on the subject. The search for articles for this integrative review was done in the electronic databases Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE) and Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS) in the period from 2010 to 2020. These articles were analyzed according to year, language and in relation to the use of natural probiotics. Thus, through the evaluated studies it was possible to verify that the natural probiotics guarantee the balance of the intestinal microbiota and enhance the inhibition of pathogenic microorganisms related to the most common food toxinfections, and promote the regularity of instabilities in the intestinal microbiota. In this way, probiotics can assist in the prevention of various diseases associated with the human intestine, thus showing that it is essential to deepen the knowledge regarding the application of these alternative resources for the treatment of infections and inflammations in the gastrointestinal tract.
