transmission of treponema pallidum from the mother to the baby can
result in the transmission of congenital syphilis. In Brazil, it is
estimated that 3% of pregnant women have this disease, with a risk of
vertical transmission of the treponema of around 50% to 80% and
perinatal mortality rates of up to 40%. In 1993, the Ministry of Health,
aware of the perinatal risk and the magnitude of congenital syphilis in
Brazil, proposed a project to eliminate congenital syphilis, however, the
goal of the elimination project has not been achieved and congenital
syphilis remains a problem of public health in the country. To improve
the knowledge of this disease in view of the large number of pregnant
women with syphilis, the repercussions on maternal morbidity and their
newborns, as well as the difficulty in diagnosing congenital infection,
the present study aims to address the main methods used for the
diagnosis of congenital syphilis through bibliographic research.
Knowledge of diagnostic methods and their correct laboratory
interpretation allows for early identification and adequate treatment of
the disease, in addition to contributing to the eradication of congenital syphilis in our country. There is a range of means for diagnosing
syphilis, for example, tests classified as no and treponemic, however, a
combination of the two types of t.pallidum infection tests is
recommended. Non-treponemic serology (VDRL and RPR) is indicated
for screening in population groups and monitoring treatment, while
treponemic serology (FTA-Abs. TPHA, ELISA) is used to confirm the
diagnosis, being useful for excluding VDRL results. false positive. The
more recent the syphilis acquired by the pregnant woman, the greater
the intensity and probability of vertical transmission of t.pallidum.
Therefore, the best measure of control of congenital syphilis is to provide
all pregnant women with adequate prenatal care. | Keywords : | | congenital syphilis Treponema pallidum pregnant |
